Brilliantly supported and hosted in the best venue around, Molto’s Nightclub recently saw a feast of pool at Welshpool & District Andrew’s Fish Bar Pool League’s finals day.
The Pheasant Nomads had already secured the 1st Division League title for an unprecedented 8th year in a row, and were keen to add to their trophy haul in a variety of finals throughout the day. The Oak “A” Guilsfield took runner up position in the League, with the Angel “B” third and Cock “A" Galacticos fourth.
The Division Two new boys and League Champions (Lion Westbury) were a class apart in Division Two, and they were also involved in several finals throughout the day. The Cock Brockton were a worthy second, with Grapes Waterloo third and the Cock “B” Forden fourth.
The Courthouse Judges took the first major trophy of the day, with a classy 5-2 win over an excellent Cock “B” Forden side in the Consolation Cup. The Cock B have impressed in Division Two this season, but the Courthouse put a disappointing league season behind them as they also looked forward to contesting the Inaugural Andrew’s Cup final with the Lion Westbury later on in the day.
The Lion Westbury added the Hughie Lewis Div 2 Cup to their League title with an impressive 5-2 win over the Pinewood B. Both teams had overcome stiff opposition in the semi finals, but some terrific finishing from the Lion helped them to a 4-1 lead in the singles session. The Pinewood B played some very good pool but the Lion weren’t to be denied as they wrapped up the match with the second doubles game.
The defending mixed doubles champions Alan “Beefy” Jones and Laura Williams took on the strong Cobra pairing of James Gittins and Nia Roberts in the Dave Addicott Memorial Cup. The reigning champions (and hot favourites) didn’t disappoint as they retained their title with a solid 3-0 win.
This year’s Doubles finalists were Andy Francis & Andy Mcninch (Nomads) and Mike Bebb & Geraint Trevor-Jones (Angel B) where the two Andy’s came out on top 3-1. The doubles competition was a huge event this year with a record 53 partnerships taking part!
The Inaugural Ladies Cup was also a huge hit this season, with a fantastically well supported final taking place between Lorna Thomas (Slayers) and Nia Roberts (Cobra). Nia led out 2-0 but a missed black by Nia to seal the win was the catalyst for a terrific comeback as Lorna took 3 frames in a row to become our first Ladies Singles Champion!
The eagerly anticipated and well received Andrew’s Cup saw the Courthouse Judges pitted against the Lion Westbury, with both teams level on handicap (a perfect backdrop for a final where the winners would walk away with £500 prize money!).
Both teams were buoyant from earlier final wins, but it was the Lion who came out the traps better as they sprinted to a 3-0 lead. The Courthouse were determined to get back in to the match as they took the last two frames of the session to leave it nicely poised at 3-2. The Lion regained the upper hand and momentum however, as they then won the next 3 frames to become the first team to lift the Andrew’s Cup.
The Trebles final between Dean Arthur, Steve Jones & Steve Davies (Nomads) with Jason Stokes, Gary Gindrat & Roger Russell (Cock “A” Galacticos), served as a precursor to the Main Cup later on. In a tightly contested match where several chances were missed by the Cock side; the Nomads trio managed to find the edge to see off their counterparts 5-3 and take the match.
